Guide Dogs Queensland
In 2010, Guide Dogs Queensland (GDQ) commemorates its Golden Anniversary. From humble beginnings in May 1960 the association has grown to be the premier provider of services to Queensland’s blind and vision impaired community, and one of the state’s most respected charities.
The first Guide Dog in Queensland was ‘Wane’ and belonged to Mrs LR Arnold of West End in Brisbane. The pair trained in Perth in 1958 and on the 26th of May 1960 Mrs Arnold was elected as the first President of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association of Queensland. The first Guide Dog Team in North Queensland was Mr Hubie Morris and Guide Dog ‘Halda’. Mr Morris began the Townsville Auxiliary which raised over $60,000 in the early years. He was awarded an OAM for his effort.
Thank you for helping thousands of fellow Queenslanders who are blind or vision impaired find their way safely and with dignity. We invite you to celebrate with us as we commit to another 50 years of providing life changing services free of charge.
