Keep your canine cool this summer

October 29, 2020

As you keep yourself cool away from the summer heat, it’d be pretty “ruff” not to consider your furry family members too!

With Queensland set to have some of the hottest days on record this summer, it’s vital that you take some simple actions to prevent your dog from becoming a hot dog.

“Keeping your dog healthy and cool in summer comes down to ensuring they have the essentials, like lots of water and shade,” explained Guide Dog Services Team Leader Jason Stankoski.

“When the temperatures soar it’s important to keep a close eye on your dog and contact a vet if you notice any unusual behaviour or any form of injury.”

Here are some tips to help you keep your dog cool:

  • Use boots on your dog’s paws – just like humans, our dogs have sensitive feet (paws) as well. Using booties stops the paw rom getting too hot. Always remember to check the pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
  • Cooling water coasts are a great option and instantly cool our dogs down.
  • Use terracotta type water bowls. These type of bowls do not retain heat like metal bowls do, therefore your dog’s water will remain cool and drinkable.
  • Offer plenty of water and shade.
  • Never leave your dog in the car.
  • If your dog is inside, keep your house cool by closing the curtains and turning on the air conditioning or fans.
  • If your dog is outside, wet the concrete so they have a cool place to lie.
  • Never take your dog for a walk in the middle of the day or in peak heat.
