GDQ's International White Cane Day celebration draws a crowd
Guide Dogs Queensland celebrated International White Cane Day on Friday, 15 October, with a community awareness event in the Queen Street Mall. Brisbane City Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor and 4BC reporter Tanya Grimward donned blindfolds and joined more than 20 White Cane Users to walk around the mall, raising awareness of the Braille Trail. Both Ms Owen-Taylor and Ms Grimward commented on the difficulty of relying on a White Cane for mobility and the need for pedestrians to give way on the trail.

Ceremony celebrates UltraCane graduates
Guide Dogs Queensland celebrated World Sight Day on Thursday, 14 October, with a Graduation Ceremony for six clients who have mastered the UltraCane in the past 12 months. Inspired by the echolocation process used by bats, the UltraCane is a White Cane with a sonar device that sends a signal when it locates obstacles at and above waist height.

Join us in the mall for International White Cane Day this Friday
Guide Dogs Queensland is celebrating International White Cane Day by asking the community to 'see' the world through the eyes of of someone who is blind or vision impaired. The association is asking people to be aware of features in the city that help people with low or no vision to move around safely and independently, and to be mindful of their needs. A community awareness event planned to draw attention to the Braille Trail in the Queen Street Mall today has been cancelled due to the unfavourable weather. If the event is rescheduled, updates will be provided via the website.

Coffee lovers support GDQ fundraiser on the Sunshine Coast
Thanks to all those coffee lovers who dropped in to Raffaele’s Restaurant in Maroochydore for their caffeine fix during Puppy Appeal Week from 6 – 12 September. Raffaele’s Restaurant raised $350 for Guide Dogs Queensland through the sale of Puppycinos and Pupcakes.

'Webcke' likely to lead new Queensland team - December 2010
Guide Dogs Queensland recently honoured rugby league legend Shane Webcke by naming one of its prized puppies after the former Bronco and Australian Test forward. The charity made the gesture after the man once regarded as the best front-rower in the world, committed himself and his family to helping the organisation raise funds. Shane is the new ‘face’ of Guide Dogs Queensland’s Christmas Appeal and features in a personalised letter from its CEO being delivered to post-boxes around the State. Given the widespread popularity of the former Maroon hardman and current Channel Seven presenter, the charity is confident Queenslanders will embrace the Appeal.

Shane Webcke ‘kicking goals’ for Guide Dogs Queensland
Footy great Shane Webcke is helping to promote Guide Dogs Queensland through his work with local junior rugby league club, the Albany Creek Crushers. Mr Webcke, whose Royal Hotel in Leyburn sponsors the Crushers, asked the club to give GDQ free advertising space on its 2011 jerseys as a way of promoting the vital service that we provide to Queenslanders who are blind or vision impaired. The club has agreed to feature the GDQ logo on its 2011 jerseys at no cost to the association.

GDQ celebrates at biggest Puppy Progression Party ever!
Guide Dogs Queensland celebrated the progression of 20 puppies from Puppy Development to formal Guide Dog Training this week. More than 50 people attended the Puppy Progression Party at the GDQ Breeding and Training Centre on Tuesday, 28 September, to recognise the puppies that are about to enter Guide Dog Training and acknowledge the hard work of the volunteers who have raised the pups for the past 10 months.

GDQ welcomes 20 gorgeous puppies this week
It has been a busy week in our Breeding Centre, with the birth of three litters. On Monday night, Broods ‘Sabina’ and ‘Lark’ each delivered seven beautiful pups. The next day, ‘Uma’ delivered six.
