Ceremony celebrates UltraCane graduates
Guide Dogs Queensland celebrated World Sight Day on Thursday, 14 October, with a Graduation Ceremony for six clients who have mastered the UltraCane in the past 12 months.
Inspired by the echolocation process used by bats, the UltraCane is a White Cane with a sonar device that sends a signal when it locates obstacles at and above waist height.
Medallions were presented to the six graduates, before the crowd heard from Guest Speaker, Acting Commissioner for the Anti Discrimination Commission for Queensland, Ms Neroli Holmes, and UltraCane graduate Victoria Moore. A performance by young Guide Dogs Queensland client and budding musician, Zach Blunt, provided a perfect end to the ceremony.
Another two Guide Dogs Queensland clients have graduated with the UltraCane in the past 12 months but were unable to attend the ceremony. Bundaberg resident Rikki Chaplin was presented with his medallion at an International White Cane Day lunch in Bundaberg on Friday.
