Guide Dogs sizzle for 50th Anniversary celebration
This year marks a significant milestone for Guide Dogs Queensland as the iconic service celebrates 50 years in Queensland.
To coincide with its birthday celebrations, Bunning’s Warehouse in Toowoomba is hosting a two-day fundraising event from 13 – 14 March.
Across the weekend a host of activities will be held including a daily BBQ manned by the Toowoomba City Rotary club, Puppy Sponsorship and Merchandise stalls, and a DIY Children’s project that will be donated to Guide Dogs Queensland upon completion.
GDQ Toowoomba Community Relations Officer Meg Winterford said 2010 was about engaging the community as GDQ celebrated its ‘Golden’ Anniversary. “We are so humbled by the support we receive in the general community, and this weekend at Bunning’s will be a great opportunity to raise awareness of Queenslanders who benefit from our services,” Ms Winterford said.
“We are hopeful that in our 50th year more people realise that our range of services extend beyond Guide Dogs, including UltraCanes, Electronic Travel Aids and counselling. It is only with the support of the community, that we are able to continue to provide these all free of charge.”
Meg will also bring ‘Ivy’, a Guide Dog-in-training along to Bunning’s to meet and greet.
In 2010, GDQ hopes to raise $1.5 million for a new Breeding and Training Centre, while training another more cadets in Guide Dog Training and Orientation and Mobility Instruction.
GDQ services over 2500 clients, with over 200 residing on the Darling Downs.
