Christmas lights up for Guide Dogs in Wynnum West - December 2010

Wynnum West residents will host some very special guests as part of their Christmas lights display this year.
Visitors to homes in Genjustins Street will not only enjoy a cracker of a Christmas light display – they will meet Guide Dogs-in-training as part of a fundraising appeal for Guide Dogs Queensland.
Resident Desrae Watson and said homes in her street had been lighting up for over ten years but this was the first year they would raise money as part of the association’s ‘Leading Light’ appeal.
“People arrive by the bus load and the street is filled with families coming out to enjoy the lights so we thought this year we’d raise some money to train more Guide Dogs,” Ms Watson said.
“I love dogs and I feel that people who are blind must benefit so much from having a dog that has been trained to be their eyes and their companion,” she said.
Ms Watson said Guide Dogs-in-training would be on hand to meet and greet Christmas light enthusiasts each night in Genjustins St from Monday, 20 December to Wednesday, 22 December between 7pm and 8.30pm.
She is urging visitors to bring their purses along to drop coins into Collection Dogs that will be set up as part of the displays.
Guide Dogs Queensland Chief Executive Officer Chris Laine thanked the residents of Genjustins St for showing a commitment to the spirit of giving this Christmas.
“Guide Dogs Queensland receives no government funding to breed, train and place our Guide Dogs so we rely on people in the community to donate the $30,000 needed for each one,” Ms Laine said.
