Guide Dogs need a holiday too! - November 2010

Volunteer boarding carer Stuart Lumsden with ‘Charlie’, a 19-month-old Labrador Golden Retriever crossGuide Dogs Queensland is looking for people to board trained Guide Dogs and adorable puppies in their homes over the Christmas break.

The dogs are aged between three months and two years, and boarders do not need any special skills other than a secure yard and lots of love to give.

Guide Dogs Queensland CEO Chris Laine said the Guide Dogs-in-training simply needed a relaxing break from their routine, while younger puppies needed short term stay overs due to puppy raisers being away.

“We are not looking for dog experts!” Ms Laine said. “We need people who love dogs and have time available over the Christmas period.”

She said all bedding, food, instructions and veterinary support was provided, and advice was readily available about how to settle the dog into your home.

“We provide boarders with everything they need to ensure the dog or pup fits happily into their home and routine,” she said.

Ms Laine said it was a great opportunity for people to support the Guide Dog Training Program, while enjoying the company of a delightful, well-behaved and highly-intelligent dog.

“It’s an extremely rewarding experience getting to know one of these special dogs, they are a pleasure to have around.”

“Boarders will also be helping us produce relaxed and content Guide Dogs for people who are blind or have low vision,” she said.

Ms Laine said if a family was considering buying a puppy as a Christmas present, boarding a pup was also a good way to see whether they were ready for the responsibility.
