New technology on show at Mobility Expo - Sept 09

THE latest in adaptive technology, mobility and daily living aids and services that assist Queensland’s blind and vision impaired will be on show at Guide Dogs Queensland’s Mobility Expo on Wednesday, September 16.

Between 10am and 2pm, current and prospective clients, their families and friends and the general community are invited to enjoy a day of education and interaction browsing displays from Guide Dogs Queensland and 14 other industry-related agencies.

Rehabilitation Services Manager Bashir Ebrahim (OAM) said the Mobility Expo was held as part of Disability Action Week and made it easier for local people who are blind or vision impaired to access a wide variety of support services under the one roof.

“Though GDQ is best known for its Guide Dogs, our rehabilitation services comprises the bulk of what we do,” Mr Ebrahim said.

“Our rehabilitation services include training in the white cane and electronic travel aids, counselling, low vision clinics and special programs for children, which we provide to some 1500 clients across the State free of charge.

“The expo is a fun and relaxed way to get more information and trial some of the new gadgets that are available to assist people who are blind and vision impaired achieve independence, mobility and freedom to live and work in the community.”

A sausage sizzle, tea, coffee and drinks will be available and a shuttle bus will run every half hour to and from the Bald Hills Train Station.  For more information about the Mobility Expo please call Guide Dogs Queensland on 07 3500 9060.
