Muslim leaders invited to GDQ - Sept 09
In a State first, Guide Dogs Queensland will host a seminar for the Imaam’s Council of Queensland on Thursday, September 24.In an effort to grow awareness of services available to Muslims with low or no vision, 25 Muslim spiritual leaders have been invited to GDQ’s Breeding and Training Centre in Bald Hills from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
The group will learn about all services from White Cane training to Guide Dog mobility and undertake a tour of the Breeding and Training centre.
GDQ Rehabilitation Services Manager Bashir Ebrahim (OAM) said he was proud to host the seminar as the first of many more with specific community groups.
“I hope to build a greater awareness within the Muslim community about our association, and then expand workshops to include the State’s many other ethnic and indigenous communities,” Mr Ebrahim said.
“It’s only through open dialogue and education programs that we can ensure all Queenslanders with low or no vision are aware of the services available. There is a need to promote a better understanding of cultural differences and address misconceptions.
GDQ is the State’s leading provider of Rehabilitation and Guide Dog Services, which are provided free-of-charge and include white cane training, children’s programs, counselling, electronic travel aid programs and low vision clinics.
“We want to ensure that everyone who needs support to live independently despite their vision loss is able to get the help they need, and this seminar will go a long way in growing that awareness within the State’s Muslim community.”
