Paw-fect excuse for a coffee - September 2010

Sunshine Coast residents are invited to indulge in a Puppycino and Pupcake at Raffaele’s Restaurant in Ocean Street, Maroochydore, next week.
The canine-inspired cappuccino and cupcakes are available as part of Guide Dogs Queensland’s ‘Puppy Appeal Week’  from 6 – 12 September, with a portion of the proceeds going towards the training of more Guide Dogs.
Guide Dogs Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Community Relations Manager Ms Olwyn Kerr said the association received no government funding for its Guide Dogs, which each cost $30,000 to train.
“It is through the support of the community and businesses like Raffaele’s Restaurant that we have been able to provide our services free-of-charge for the past 50 years,” Ms Kerr said.
There are currently 79 working Guide Dogs in Queensland, another 29 in formal training and 80 in Puppy Development, with volunteers on the Sunshine Coast helping to raise 19 puppies.
Highlighting the joys of Puppy Raising is one of the many functions of Puppy Appeal Week, which is being promoted by GDQ’s regional office on the Sunshine Coast.
Guide Dogs Queensland needs regular volunteers to love and care for puppies from 10 weeks of age until about 14 months, when the pups are ready to begin Guide Dog Training.
Ms Kerr said Guide Dogs Queensland would welcome four litters into the world this month.
“These gorgeous puppies will need loving families to help raise them,” Ms Kerr said.
“Puppy Raisers are responsible for teaching basic obedience skills and good manners, and for taking the puppy to public places such as restaurants, shopping centres and on public transport.
“They receive one-on-one support from our team, and we cover all food, equipment and vet bills.”
