Southport students raise more than $10,000 for Guide Dogs - August 2010

Students from The Southport School raised more than $10,000 for Guide Dogs Queensland earlier this month, in their 10th annual fundraising campaign.

About 30 students from Years 8 – 12 collected $8,821 at shopping centres across the Coast in a three-day campaign from 4 – 6 August.

They raised an additional $1,600 in parent donations and raffle proceeds, pushing their fundraising total up to $10,421.

The school’s Radcliffe House has been fundraising for Guide Dogs Queensland for the past 10 years.

Guide Dogs Queensland will host a pizza party at Radcliffe House tomorrow in appreciation of the students’ efforts. Guide Dog-in-training (PR) ‘Xavier’ will attend the party to personally thank the students for their generosity.

“We have a regional office on the Gold Coast and provide a range of training and support services to hundreds of Gold Coast residents who are blind or have low vision,” Guide Dogs Queensland Community Relations Officer Jane Wright said.
“We are proud of our history of service on the Gold Coast and are indebted to the local community and The Southport School for continuing to support the association through donations and volunteering.”
Guide Dogs Queensland is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The association held its first meeting in 1960 and has since grown to become a world leader in the provision of Guide Dogs, Long Canes, electronic aids and support to people who are blind or vision impaired.
