International Guide Dog Day is coming up on Wednesday 29 April, and this year we are focussing on the theme of “Guide Dogs can go anywhere” to promote inclusiveness and access for blind and vision impaired people, and especially for those travelling with a Guide Dog.
Through these sorts of education campaigns, we hope the community will recognise Guide Dogs more and welcome them to the same places sighted people can go into – including accommodation, cafes, restaurants, shopping centres, hospitals, churches and all forms of transport (like trains, buses and taxis).
As part of the celebrations around the state, we’ll be awarding certificates of appreciation to organisations that go the extra mile to accommodate residents with low or no vision and to make it even easier for our Guide Dogs to go anywhere. These organisations have been selected by the Client Services department, based on feedback from our clients.
We will also be celebrating our annual Brisbane Guide Dog Team Graduation on International Guide Dog Day (29 April), as well as regional graduations on the Gold Coast (15 April) and in Cairns (5 May). Our graduation ceremonies recognise the achievement of those clients and Guide Dogs who have qualified together as a team over the past year, as well as the dogs that have graduated onto our Breeding Program.
Happy International Guide Dog Day everyone!
