Edging closer to parking permit win

One of the areas where your support helps is to allow us to advocate on behalf of our clients, such as calling on the Queensland Government to change its disability parking criteria to include vision impairment.

Brisbane father Rhett said there had been too many “close calls” in carparks for him and his Guide Dog Jeffrey.

“Most people are in disbelief when I explain that people who are blind or vision impaired cannot access a disability parking permit here in Queensland,” he said.

“It’s a tragedy waiting to happen, but it’s also an easy fix. Let’s hope common sense prevails before there is a tragedy.”

Guide Dogs Queensland CEO Michael Kightley paid tribute to the people who have been instrumental in the push for change.

“It’s an area that you might not know much about, but advocacy is one of the most important ways your support continues to
help Queenslanders with low or no vision. Thank you.”

“After advocating and pursuing this issue for a number of years, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads introduced a Bill to Parliament late last year that will finally allow Queenslanders who are vision impaired to apply for a permit,” Mr Kightley said.

The Bill will be debated and hopefully passed mid-year.
