We are very excited to announce that we have recently welcomed two new Occupational Therapists (OTs) to our team, meaning we are now able to offer this service state wide!
New OTs Janine and Roxanne come from different backgrounds within OT practice, but both are very eager to begin working with our clients to make a difference to their everyday lives.
“I have 20 years’ experience as an OT working with people who have acquired brain injuries or neurological conditions, and I’ve also worked in paediatrics,” Janine said.
“Working with Guide Dogs will be a bit different for me but OTs can work in any area where a persons’ independence is affected by factors such as age, mental health, or in this case, vision impairment.
“If you have a vision impairment, day-to-day activities might take you longer to complete, but we can teach you strategies to help and provide advice about different assistive devices that may be useful to you.”
Roxanne meanwhile is a recent graduate hailing from Perth, who gained experience working with people who are blind or vision impaired during her time at VisAbility in Western Australia.
“Our goal is always to improve the client’s quality of life by either helping to teach them strategies to navigate daily activities efficiently, or to adjust their environment to best suit their needs,” Roxanne said.
“A lot of people don’t realise the number of services that Guide Dogs offers beyond the dogs and prior to this our OT services have only been available in Townsville, so it’s really rewarding to be able to help broaden the reach of our services throughout Queensland.”
Roxanne and Janine will be based in our head office in Brisbane but will be assisting clients all over the state. They will be hitting the road to begin working with clients later this month.
