Give your child the best possible start

We’re here for you and your family every step of the way to help your child reach the milestones they need to feel happy and confident in the world.

Every step of the way

Finding out your child is blind or has low vision can be scary and overwhelming.

Your mind can become flooded with questions like will they have a regular childhood? Will they still get to experience a full life? Will they get a job one day, get married and have children of their own?

We understand how important it is for you to have the peace of mind that your child will achieve whatever they want to in life.

That’s why we’re here to walk alongside you, your family and your child as they grow into adulthood.

Our devoted team will work with you to help you gain more knowledge and confidence, while helping your child learn the early skills they need to reach their potential.

Skills for growth and development

Children learn by watching, exploring and interacting with others. Children who are blind or have low vision are no different, they may just need a little extra help and time.

By teaching your child alternative ways to learn, we can help them gain the practical skills they need to grow. This may include helping them to develop:

  • Sense of space to help them move and explore environments
  • Social skills to interact with others and enjoy play
  • Techniques to increase their awareness of the world
  • An understanding of their body and their senses
  • Early independent thinking skills
  • Confidence and pride in who they are.

Danielle and Hunter’s story

Hunter has grown so much independence using his cane and it’s enabled him to get around with confidence rather than just crawling around. He loves learning how to play with others and to use the vision he does have. We are so grateful for all of Guide Dogs’ help.

Support for parents

As a parent, we all worry about the growth and development of our children. But by assisting you and your child with vision loss, we can help to ease some of your concerns.

Supporting you to support them

We understand that being a parent of a child with a vision impairment can come with lots of questions about how to best assist them both now and throughout their life.

That’s why you play a big part in the services your child receives, so you know exactly what they’re learning and are able to support them and help them practice outside our sessions. Our instructors will also work with you to develop the skills you need to help your child learn, which can help you to become more knowledgeable and confident.

As we work together, our goal is to help you receive the support you need to know your child can be independent.
